On the RAID 2020 survey along the Anne Beadell Highway last August, my car Daffyduck had a lot of shock absorber related problems. The first problem was the front passenger side shock absorber mount which had broken off the chassis. This was welded at the Yeo homestead site where we spent the night of Day 1. Over the next week, the other 3 shock absorber pins snapped off. By Coober Pedy I had no shock absorbers left on the car. We drove from Coober Pedy back to Sydney without any shock aborbers and Daffyduck didn’t seem to notice the difference. I believe the cause of the problem was me, because I replaced good Lipmesa shock absorbers used from new only on RAID 2008 with no problems. For RAID 2016 I decided to put on new Monroe shock absorbers (Lipmesa had gone out of business). On RAID 2016, the was quite a bit of suspension damage to cars, with Monroe often being the shock absorber used. I suggest anyone that intends replacing their Lipmesa or Monroe shock absorbers to visit the Burton site and look at their shock absorbers. They mention the importance of the length of travel (Monroe’s weakness) and have organised the manufacture of shock absorbers based on the same specifications as the Lipmesa. IF you still have Monroe shock absorbers on RAID 2020, I suggest you remove them at Laverton, travel the Anne Beadell without shock absorbers and then replace them at either Coober Pedy or Birdsville.
