After lusting after a 2CV for most of my life, I’m now in the unforeseen situation of having two of them in my garage! I really only own 1 1/2, as the new one is shared with a Mate with a plan to do one or more RAIDS in it. More anon on that.
Picture below is of the beast, still trying to pin down the year of manufacture. Can’t find an ORGA number and the VIN seems to be in a different order to those quoted from other UK sourced cars.
Anyway, I’ve got a more pressing issue with it at this stage, concerning the suspension. Thought I’d throw the question out in this forum (as well as on Aussiefrogs) and see if anyone can enlighten me further.
Pictures will follow, but I thought I’d get the questions out into the wide world first.
This car was sitting extremely low at the front. It bounces, but the left hand (passenger’s) side was almost down to the bump stop.
I’ve jacked it all up (using a redgum plank under the strong points of the chassis) and removed the knife edges both sides.
On the RH (good) side, I can pull the tie rod from the spring can forward by about an inch or so. Levering on this in the forward direction I can feel the springiness of the spring. Does that make sense so far?
On the (low) LH side, the released tierod can pull forward about 2 inches or so, but I can still feel a bit of “springy” in it, just not much.
Is it possible for the tierod to have come adrift from the sping end cap on the inside end of the spring? Has anyone heard of this happening? Could the spring perhaps have broken or collapsed, or maybe simply be saggy?
There’s roughly the same amount of thread available for adjustment on both side’s tierods, so I don’t think it’s an adjustment issue. If it was, I’d expect to see the LH side with a lot more exposed thread.
The knife edges and the eyes they work in seem to be in good condition. The rods can turn freely in the eye’s thread on the RHS so I suspect that fiddling has been perpetrated at some stage. If there was a large disparity in the threads side to side I’d suspect that vibration had “wound it down” but there isn’t and the LH side feels definitely dodgy to my novice’s hands.
I’m half tempted to wind it all up to see if I can achieve a normal ride height, but if the front LH spring is knackered this is just going to cause problems I suspect.
At the end of the day I suspect I’ll need to pull the whole lot off, hit up ECAS for some new springs and other bits. I’d like to avoid this if possible at this stage, but down the track if it needs it, we’ll have to do it.
I guess it’s also worth asking the question, does anyone have a pair of late spring assemblies available that I could compare with and maybe purchase as replacements?
Any guidance at this stage would be welcome. I’ve been reading up all I can about this unique system (I’ve always loved the concept of it and I’m throughly enjoying getting hands on at last.)
