After many years of lusting after a 2CV today I became the proud owner of a little Gem.
It’s a 1957 Slough AZ which has been stored since 1969. It’s substantially complete, only missing a couple of small things, but the whole car is almost original.
The engine is in pieces in a box, but it came with spares aplenty.
Bonus was the set of brand new metric tyres on it!
Pictures when I stop jumping up and down with excitement!
Just thought I’d share!

Good luck with the project. We’ll be looking out for progress reports.19 Dec 2010 at 3:18 am #501PottsyParticipantThe only r***st is in a couple of spots under the footwells of the body. Chassis appears to be intact and uncorroded.
Hasn’t had any restoration at all, other than a couple of plates roughly riveted over the aforementioned bits. The paint has been sort of touched up with a coarse paintbrush in spots as well. Interior is almost complete and totally original.
The tyres are only a year or so old. Previous owner got enthused and put them on to facilitate a move from his sister’s barn in Gippsland to his shed down Geelong way. These were a welcome bonus, but I would have bought it anyway, it’s just too good to ignore.
Progress will be slow as I’m not yet retired and the space to work on it limited at present. Doesn’t mean I won’t be progressing with mechanicals though.

Oh, and he’s now called “Alphonse” after the neighbour who introduced me to the Citroen Marque in about 1962.

22 Dec 2010 at 7:31 am #503PottsyParticipantObviously the restoration of this car will take a long time, not because I want it to, but more because I need to do it a bit at a time due to space issues.
As I discover new things, or make any progress I’ll post here for the delectation, delight and edification of those who seek the same goals.
I got stuck in to the rear quarter with some cutting compund today and the result really surprised me. I may get away with not painting the beast yet.
Anyway, I’ve got some questions for the Brains Trust.
The roof. It seems to be in good condition, no rips or tears. It’s certainly very dusty. What should I be using to clean it? Is there some kind of vinyl restorer like Dissol I can use on it or are there products I should stay away from?
Below are a couple of photos inside and out. As you will see the inside is quite intact as well and probably only needs a clean also. I deliberately haven’t un-clipped it yet because I’d like to clean it first under tension.
The other cleaning question refers to the rather quaint patterned lining in the parcel shelf. Gricy reckoned he’d never seen one as intact, which is great, but once again, any recommendations as to cleaners for this stuff? I’m not even sure if it’s vinyl or cardboard.
All feedback will be accepted, considered and probably not discarded. Thanks in advance for the help I hope to glean from you all who know 2CV’s way better than me.

Were these only on the early cars or perhaps an add-on?
Or maybe only on the Slough built examples?I’m envious! And the condition of the little beast is simply amazing…:D
22 Dec 2010 at 9:59 pm #505PottsyParticipantAs I understand it, the main differences of a Slough AZ from the LHD ones coming from France were as follows:
Colours other than grey available
Rear windows open same as front
Metal boot lid and fixed back window (roll up window in some versions)
Different front bumper assembly
Chevrons on front grille without oval surround
Script “Citroen” badge (from the TA) on boot
“Front Drive” bonnet ornament and chrome strip up bonnet.Obviously trims were different as they were sourced in the UK.
I’m sure there are lots of other detail diferences that I’ve either missed or just don’t know about. I’m equally sure there are people out there who can tell us, and I welcome the information. I want to bring Alphonse back to a driveable standard so I can enjoy the experience. Not concours, but complete and usable.
I also suspect Alphonse may be an AZL (for luxury!) since he’s also got the chrome strips on the sides and a couple of hub caps.

24 Dec 2010 at 6:35 am #507PottsyParticipantHad the opportunity to try some Magic Stuff on the roof of Alphonse today.
A friend who knows about these things (he cleans cars often, unlike myself. (My cars get washed when it rains) He’s also a retailer who’s tried many different products on his fleet of Classics.
His recommendation was to try “AutoGlym” Vinyl & Rubber Care. It’s not cheap, but Crikey is it good!
Have a look at these shots showing the area I’ve cleaned next to the “as found” roof.
Compare them with the previous shots of the roof in post 7.
I’m impressed!
I can’t help wondering if a 2010 soft top will still come up like this in 2053?

(Oh and the reason I’ve only done the Driver’s side so far is because I can’t get to the other side without rolling the car out of the garage.)
