Hi,
I went to change my gearbox oil and could only get Castrol EPX80W-90. (The handbook says to use the EP80 Castrol Hypoy Light)
Is this a suitable for the 2CV gearbox? My unit is a 1989 2CV6 model.

21 Nov 2010 at 9:47 pm #469PhilthyPhilParticipantDon’t know if the EPX80 has active additives (there is nothing about active aditives on the bottle), but the data sheet states the following:- Castrol EPX Gear Oils have excellent thermal stability, resistance to oxidation and offer good corrosion protection to both ferrous and nonferrous components.
The data sheet also talks about using Castrol EPX 75W/80 for use with Saab 99, Citroen, Renault and Peugeot manual gearboxes. (It does not state what year or models)
The Haynes book recomends using EP80, but the Citroen owners manual states BV 75W-80.
I will check out Repco or Supercheap for the Castrol EPX 75W/80.

I’ve been trying to bring up the Castrol web site(s) for some time now, but without luck.
Elsewhere, I’ve established that the Castrol EPX is API GL-5, so maybe best to stay away from that.
Other possibilities to use might be…
Shell Spirax GX 80w, Shell Advance Gear EP 80w or Penrite Manual Gear 80. These, I am pretty certain, are all GL-4’s.Stop Press: finally got onto the Castrol site: looks like Castrol VMX80 is a no-no as it is not recommended for hypoid diffs.
Same goes for the “Syntrans” Castrol products, too.
So we’re looking for a GL-4 EP oil of nominal 80 viscosity. I’d say it’s easiest to go with the Nulon, or else one of the three mentioned above?Oh, and since the last edit, Ive found this interesting read: written by a Chev Corvair owner, but very, very informative re GL-4 & GL-5 gear oils.

I ended up getting the Penrite Manual Gear light SAE 80W-85, as it is the only one that claims to be safe with Yellow metal on the bottle. (Ended up getting this from Auto Pro)
Penrite kept my old Valiant going when I was a teenager, so maybe I feel that I owe these guys something.
23 Nov 2010 at 1:50 am #476JBNParticipantI have Red Line Synthetic MT-90 which is a SAE 75W90 API GL-4 Gear oil. A lot of 2CV owners in WA use it and swear by it. This is what it also says:
Most gear oils, ATFs and motor oils are too slippery for proper synchro engagement – which causes gear clash when shifting. Most GL-5 gear oils contain reactive sulfur which can chemically wear synchros and shorten synchro life by 50% compared to Red Line MT90. MT-90 has a coefficient of friction which is perfect for rapid synchro engagement and allows high speed upshifting and downshifting. MT90 is recommended for all manual transmissions and front-wheel drive manual transaxles which recommend motor oils, or GL-1, GL-3 or GL-4 gear oils. Petroleum multigrade motor oils and transmission fluids contain polymers which shear down rapidly under the action of gear teeth and rapidly lose viscosity, significantly reducing their lubricating ability. The extreme stability of this product allows use for extended periods.
It is not cheap at about $50 for .946 liters (ie one gearbox fill), but on their website they were talking about very high milages between changes.

I am enjoying and learning a lot about oil from the thread.
From the Penrite web site they recommend the “Penrite Transaxle 75” for a 74-90 2CV, this is a GL-5 oil. (I am still leaning towards their GL-4 Manual Gear Oil 80)

Phil, from memory, I couldn’t even find a reference to 2CV’s on the Penrite site: would you be able to post a link to the site you mentioned there?
(I’d be inclined to go the GL-4 route myself, by the way…)

Right! Got it at last, but I’d be cynical enough to suggest that they’re not too interested in how long the synchro rings last in our cars. I’ll be taking the Manual Gear Oil 80 route, I reckon…
