Anyone else out there who’s lost synchro on 3rd gear?
I have, and although it’s no problem to keep driving the Dolly, one has to be very – er – sensitive about changes up (down’s not such an issue via double declutching, of course: old stuff to one who drives a veteran car…).
My suspicion is that the pins (rivets? – whatever they’re called…) which fix, or used to fix, the ring to the sliding pinion have been sheared off thanks to my over-exuberant racing changes, particularly 2nd to 3rd.
All comments welcome. Not so welcome is the prospect of having to hoik out the entire engine for the repair. At least I could also take the opportunity to then sort out the potential “frozen gearbox” issue which I understand can come about in the disc braked models via too strong a use of reverse (no gymkhana garaging tests for this little red & white Duck!).10 September 2011 at 7:50 am #6592CVikingParticipant
Well you may not like to read this but gear boxes like any other part needs service or repair at some stage. Gear boxes are often ignored only oil is changed, due to the work involved getting them repaired. If the braking ring (snap ring) on the 2nd and/or 3rd gear is broken, you can not replace it wiothout sliding engine and gear box together forward in order to slide selector shafts backwards. They hit the lower firewall. In my book, take the lot out on the bench, strip the gear box and do a proper job. This way you can drive for another long time with a usable gear box an not worry about, when or if it will break down somewhere along the road.
Happy working. I’m going through Adelaide 22 dec if you like me to look at it?

Thanks Peter … it’d be great to catch up with you here in Adelaide in December & we can put you up if you wish: your choice entirely.
I should also warn you that we might even call in to see you in France as we’ll be leaving soon for 6 weeks split between UK, Belgium (Sizaire Rallye…), France then KL/Singapore.
Will try to warn you ahead if we’re calling in to see you: all a bit vague at the moment.
Cheers, Geoff.10 September 2011 at 9:56 am #6612CVikingParticipant
Pas de souci…. Merci pour votre invitation. Will catch up in Dec but need to catch a flight from Perth the 29th. Enjoy your trip to Euroland. Feel free to call in when ever you can if you visit our wonderful part of France. Some Queenslanders just turned up without warning, pas de souci. Always love visitors particular from Oz.
